Dermatologist-Recommended Fall Skin Routines

September 18, 2020 By Jeanny Deliard

Your skin protects your body against disease, it renews itself about every 28 days, and it accounts for about 15% of your body weight. Skin heals itself from injury, and it has nerves that are connected directly from the skin to the brain in order to detect temperature changes and other external factors. Skin can also change color to indicate a serious condition, such as how jaundice is a symptom of liver disease.

When the summer season turns into autumn, the drier weather can dehydrate the skin. That is why it is a good idea to make some changes in your skin care routine for the fall.

Tips for Fall Skin Care

Let’s talk about a few ways in which you can keep your skin healthy even while the air gets drier:

Exfoliate

To start off the fall season on a good note, it is excellent to get a good spa-grade exfoliation. This helps to remove any dead skin cells that could clog the pores and to remove any traces of summer products left behind on the skin.

Regular exfoliation is key to keeping your skin and complexion clear throughout the fall and winter seasons, because autumn brings plenty of clogging spores and chaff. Exfoliation should be done about twice a week in order to help prevent breakouts and to keep the skin clean and fresh.

Moisturize

Fall and winter is the time to start washing your face with a richer, thicker cleanser, like a balm. This will leave behind moisturizing residue that is good for protecting skin in dry, windy climates.

Massage the balm into your facial skin, and then wipe it off with a warm, damp washcloth. This will help to increase the level of daily protection for the cooler weather.

Continue using serums to hydrate and keep skin moist all day. Your dermatologist will explain to you which cleansers and moisturizers are best for your skin in order to maintain a clear complexion throughout the fall and winter.

Humidify

Your skin will need extra humidity in the indoor air to help avoid getting cracked and chapped during the cooler months. Consider getting a humidifier for your bedroom to help prevent your skin from becoming too dry, so your skin will soak up the moist air while you sleep at night.

Tone

Treat your skin to a hydrating toner. Look for toners that contain salicylic acid, hyaluronic acid, or glycerin to help keep your complexion moist as the air becomes dry and windy.

Mask

Wear a hydrating mask each night while you sleep, especially as the weather changes. Quality facial masks have complexion-boosting ingredients, such as olive oil and jojoba oil.
