The Importance of Seeing a Dermatologist for Your Child’s Eczema

January 15, 2021 By Olivia Pryor

Eczema is a condition that causes itchy patches to appear on the skin. While it can affect people of all ages, it is a rampant condition among children. While it is a common issue, self-medicating eczema is not recommended. Like other health problems, it is best to consult with a doctor – in this case, a dermatologist – to manage the condition in the best manner possible.

Here is more on why you should see a dermatologist for your child’s eczema.

Interference with Your Child’s Sleep

One reason why you should seek the care of a pediatric dermatologist for your child’s eczema is that the itchiness may worsen at night. This could keep your child up at night and prevent them from getting enough rest. Kids who get enough sleep tend to have better attention spans, are less moody, and are at less risk for certain health conditions like obesity and depression.

Interference with Your Child’s Daily Activities and Social Life

Your child may feel itchy and uncomfortable during the day, which can impact their education and social life. They may be too focused on the discomfort or even the embarrassment of the patches to be able to concentrate on other tasks, such as school and sports. Trying to hide the patches can lead your child to avoid social gatherings, birthday parties, hangouts, and more, leaving them isolated and unable to enjoy their childhood to the fullest extent.

A Sign of a Food Allergy

Eczema flareups are often caused by triggers. Your child’s eczema could flare up as a result of a food allergy. This is a highly manageable issue, especially if you find out what the exact trigger is through allergy testing. By knowing what the allergen is, you can prevent serious reactions from occurring.

Skin Infection Risk

Frequent eczema increases the risk of infection. Eczema patches are often very itchy, which children are more likely to scratch. Frequent scratching can lead to wounds, which are highly susceptible to infections. The best way to avoid this complication is to control eczema from getting worse.

Skin Changes Without Treatment

If your child doesn’t receive treatment for eczema, their skin texture could change. For instance, it could become scaly and dry. Untreated eczema can also lead to skin thickening. These issues are both unsightly and uncomfortable.

Lower Self-Esteem

Uncontrolled eczema can tremendously lower your child’s self-esteem. Children and teenagers want to be liked by their peers and feel like they look their best. Eczema can cause them to stand out and feel abnormal or unattractive.
