At-Home Eczema Treatment for My Toddler

April 29, 2022

Eczema is an itchy skin condition that is common in children. The dry patches of skin can be so itchy, it can prevent them from falling asleep. Additionally, it can lead to irritability, and as toddlers are not able to vocalize what they feel, it can result in constant crying and tantrums. At the root of eczema is the skin barrier not being able to retain moisture. Combined with irritants and allergens, dry skin becomes very itchy.

No parent wants their child to suffer from eczema. Since this skin condition is characterized by flare-ups, the goal is to reduce the frequency and intensity of eczema episodes. If your child is having an eczema flare-up, here are some home treatments you can apply as you wait for an appointment with your pediatric dermatologist.

#1 Use Products Especially Formulated for Eczema

Use baby eczema wash, which contains ingredients such as colloidal oatmeal and ceramide, to hydrate your toddler’s skin and provide relief from itching. Be careful not to take too long in the bath, as it can also dry out the skin – aim for 10 to 15 minutes of bath time. After bathing, lather on lotion specially formulated for eczema sufferers – do this while your baby’s skin is still damp, so it can absorb the product. Aveeno has an excellent line of products that are clinically proven to relieve dry, itchy, and irritated skin in babies.

#2 Apply a Cold Compress

During a flare-up, apply a cold compress to the area to relieve itching. The cold temperature will numb the area and reduce your baby’s discomfort. After applying a cold compress to your baby’s skin, apply eczema lotion to the affected area.

#3 Use Topical Corticosteroids

Apply topical medication over your baby’s eczema spots. Hydrocortisone cream can calm inflammation, however, it’s important to check with your child’s pediatrician before using any medication for eczema.

#4 Moisturize

Moisturizing your toddler’s skin at least twice a day with lotion containing colloidal oatmeal can help prevent eczema flare-ups. Dry skin increases the risk of eczema flare-ups tremendously.

#5 Prevent Itching

Prevent your toddler from being able to scratch their itchy spots, which can make the condition worse. Change them into clothing made from natural fibers, such as cotton, bamboo, or silk. Make sure the clothes are loose-fitting, as it can contribute to greater comfort. Eczema mittens can also help prevent your toddler from scratching the inflamed spots and possibly infecting them.

While at-home treatments can provide relief from eczema, it is important that you see a dermatologist for your child’s skin condition, so they can get medical treatment when necessary. The good news is, most infants and toddlers who have eczema tend to overcome the condition completely.
