Questions to Ask Your Dermatologist About Cryosurgery

July 12, 2022

Cryosurgery may be around for quite some time now, but it remains extensively used in the treatment of a variety of skin conditions, including warts, skin tags, and age spots, mainly because it is effective and safe, and it can be delivered quickly.

If you’re on this page because you’ve been considering cryosurgery, and you want to talk to your dermatologist about it, the questions below can help you make a good starting point for your discussion.

Is Cryotherapy Painful?

Cryotherapy is a well-tolerated procedure. Expect to only experience a mild burning sensation. If you prefer, your dermatologist may use local anesthesia to keep you comfortable.

How Is Cryosurgery Performed?

Here’s how your dermatologist may carry out cryosurgery:

  • Your dermatologist starts with marking off the area to be treated.
  • If your dermatologist opts using a local anesthetic, they will proceed with administering it into the treatment area.
  • Your dermatologist then uses a spray canister or Q-tip to apply liquid nitrogen to your skin to freeze the tissue beneath the surface. Liquid nitrogen works immediately, although it may cause a stinging or burning sensation for a few minutes. The extreme cold is what causes the tissue to freeze and die.
  • Your dermatologist may either leave the treatment area uncovered or place a bandage over it.

Is Cryosurgery the Only Treatment Option Available for My Skin Condition?

Depending on your specific skin problem, there may be other treatment options available. For instance, if you have warts, your dermatologist may recommend laser treatment; excision, to cut out the wart; or chemical peels (for flat warts).

What Are the Potential Side Effects of Cryosurgery?

Although cryotherapy is a safe and reliable treatment, it is not devoid of side effects. Make sure to discuss the following with your dermatologist and what they can do to possibly minimize them:

  • Numbness in the area
  • Scarring
  • Bleeding
  • Hypopigmentation
  • Hair loss in the treatment area

In the days following your treatment, the area will blister and scab over as it heals, allowing new skin to grow. This should take about three weeks.

Other Questions to Ask Your Dermatologist

You also want to consider asking your dermatologist the following questions:

  • How do I prepare for the procedure?
  • How soon do I need to see you for follow-up appointment?
  • Is there any downtime after the procedure? If so, how long will it be until I can resume my normal activities?
  • What aftercare instructions do I need to follow?
  • How many cryosurgery treatments will I need to see results?
