Different Types of Acne

December 6, 2019 By Aaron Glueck

Acne is an embarrassing reality for a lot of people. While it is most common in teenagers, it is not an issue you can leave behind as you get older. A lot of people deal with acne well into adulthood.

Fortunately, there are a lot of effective treatments for acne. But to get the right treatment, you must find out what kind of acne you have. There are several different kinds of acne. While most people have a combination of them, some may just have one or two specific types.

Here are the different types of acne:

  • Blackheads This type of acne typically appears in groups on the nose and the cheeks. They are called blackheads because of their dark appearance, which is mainly due to oil, bacteria, and skin cells that get trapped in the pore, and when it gets exposed to air, it takes on a plugged, black appearance.
  • Whiteheads This acne is called whiteheads because of its white appearance, which is a result of dead skin cells building up at the surface of the skin and results in a plugged hair follicle. Unlike blackheads, whiteheads have a round and light appearance, sit on top of your skin and are also known as comedones.
  • Papules A papule is a small inflamed bump that’s red in color. It is painful to the touch, unlike blackheads and whiteheads. Papules usually respond well to spot treatments.
  • Pustules If the inflamed spot is filled with pus, it is now called a pustule. It is more commonly known as a pimple and may vary in size. The pus develops as a result of an infection, and your body’s natural response to an infection causes the redness and swelling.
  • Nodules Nodular pimples are a severe form of acne that is hard but not filled with pus. However, they are still very painful and can take weeks to go away. Nodules are either red or match the color of your skin. Because they are deeply rooted, they can damage your skin tissue from within which can cause acne scars.
  • Cysts One of the most painful things that can develop on your face are acne cysts. Acne cysts are large blemishes that are often caused by hormonal imbalances. They develop deep in the skin, block the pores, and can result in an infection. They are painful and very slow to heal. Fortunately, a dermatologist can help you effectively and quickly treat them.
