Port-Wine Stains Tips for Parents

November 20, 2020

Port-wine stains aren’t carpet stains caused by a clumsy child spilling a cup of wine. Instead, this problem is a birthmark on the skin that looks dark red or purple, like a dark wine. These birthmarks can appear anywhere on your child’s skin. While they usually don’t pose a threat to your child, port-wine stains can make your child feel self-conscious, especially if it’s on their face.

Fortunately, you can take steps to reduce the appearance, including seeking assistance from a pediatric dermatologist at the Children’s Skin Center. You should also look out for certain signs that could indicate complications.

Watch Your Child Carefully If Port-Wine Stains Are Near the Eyes

Port-wine stains can cause eye issues when they’re close to or on your child’s eyes. Your child could have a condition known as Sturge-Weber syndrome, which affects your child’s nervous system and skin. A classic symptom of this condition is port-wine stains on the forehead or around the eyes. A port-wine stain near the eyes also increases your child’s risk of glaucoma. Glaucoma is a problem when your child’s optic nerve becomes damaged. This part of the eye communicates with the brain. With glaucoma, your child may develop blind spots or tunnel vision. It can also lead to blindness. Your child may not develop symptoms until the condition advances, so it’s vital to take your child to an eye doctor regularly.

Laser Treatments

You may want to ask about a laser treatment to lighten the birthmark. The laser treatment uses concentrated light energy directed at the birthmark. The practitioner will use a “pulsed-dye” laser to target the blemish and the blood vessels in the area. The laser will help lighten and possibly shrink the birthmark.

While your child may not discuss their concerns about the birthmark until they are older, you can discuss the option of laser treatment with a pediatric dermatologist even when your child is an infant. Babies tend to respond better to laser treatment because their blood vessels are smaller, so it’s easier to treat the staining when they’re young. However, you may inquire about laser treatment no matter what age your child is. Your pediatric dermatologist may recommend a different type of laser if your child has a textured birthmark.

Use a Moisturizer

Sometimes, the birthmark may be dryer than the rest of your child’s skin. A moisturizer can help combat any dryness that may develop on the birthmark. Generally, you want to use a lotion free of perfumes and dyes, so you don’t irritate the skin.
